While large trucks pose significant risks to drivers on the road, it’s important that we all learn how to share the road with one another in order to avoid collisions. Keep reading for tips on how to avoid getting into accidents with big trucks.
The following are some tips you can use to help you avoid being involved in collisions with large trucks:
Stay Out of the Blind Spots
Large trucks have many more (and larger) blind spots than passenger cars do. As you can see from the graphic below, trucks have blind spots on all sides of the vehicle, including at least 20 feet ahead. Never sit in a truck’s blind spot, because the consequences could be disastrous.
Be Cautious When Passing
When you need to pass a truck, it’s important that you do so on the left side where the driver is better able to see you. In addition, don’t get in front of the truck until you can clearly see the driver in your rearview mirror.
Use Your Blinkers
Before passing a truck, it’s your responsibility to use your turn signals so that the truck driver knows what you plan to do. Turn your blinker on with plenty of time for the truck driver to adjust the course if needed. It’s very dangerous to change lanes in front of a truck suddenly.
Give Trucks Lots of Space
Don’t drive near trucks for too long. When you drive alongside trucks for an extended period of time, your risk of being involved in an accident due to the following significantly increases:
- Tire blowouts
- Sudden braking
- High winds
